Long before animal rescue became widely shared online through social media posts and adoption photos, ordinary people in Lethbridge were quietly stepping forward to help vulnerable animals in need.

The Lethbridge & District Humane Society officially began in 1989 after local volunteers spent nearly a year organizing fundraising efforts, policies, and community support to create a safer, more humane future for abandoned and neglected animals in southern Alberta. Their mission grew from one simple belief: animals deserve care, protection, and a second chance.

Over time, other organizations and rescue groups emerged throughout the community, including Lethbridge PAW Society and Community Animal Services - Lethbridge, each helping fill different needs within the city: from rescue and fostering to animal control, reunification, licensing, and public education.

Today, these organizations are powered not by fame or recognition, but by volunteers.

Invisible heroes.

The people bottle-feeding abandoned kittens at 2 a.m.The foster families helping scared dogs learn to trust again. The volunteers cleaning kennels after long workdays. The staff and donors raising money for surgeries, vaccinations, and emergency care. The children learning empathy through caring for animals smaller than themselves.

This work matters deeply because it reflects the heart of a community.

And Lethbridge has always been a city built on community.

As Lethbridge grew from a coal-mining settlement into a regional hub for southern Alberta, local organizations evolved alongside it to meet the changing needs of both people and animals.

Ways the Community Can Get Involved

There are many ways local families, students, youth, and community members can support animal welfare organizations in Lethbridge:

• Volunteer at shelters or adoption events

• Foster animals temporarily in your home

• Donate food, blankets, litter, or funds

• Attend community fundraisers and pet events

• Help with social media, photography, or outreach

• Adopt rescue animals• Share adoption posts online

• Teach children compassionate animal care

Organizations such as Lethbridge & District Humane Society and Lethbridge PAW Society regularly rely on foster homes and volunteers to continue their work within the community.

Community Events to Watch For

Animal organizations often participate in:

• Adoption days

• Charity nail trims

• Pet photo events

• Bottle drives

• Vendor fairs

• Farmers’ markets

• Whoop-Up Days

• Seasonal fundraisers and holiday campaigns

Community spaces and businesses throughout Lethbridge often support these efforts as well, including pet-friendly stores such as Homes Alive Pets and local volunteer organizations like Volunteer Lethbridge.

For many people, animal rescue begins as “helping pets,” but quickly becomes something larger:

a reminder that kindness still exists, that community still matters, and that small acts of compassion ripple outward farther than we realize.

Because sometimes changing the life of one animal changes the life of a person too.

“Your light matters more than you think.”
