Every community has people whose work reaches far beyond their job description.

People who quietly lift others up.

People who protect, encourage, and inspire without ever asking for recognition.

This week's Invisible Me Highlight recognizes Sheila Gruenhage, Fitness Manager with the YMCA of Lethbridge, whose leadership has left a lasting impression on the staff, members, and community she serves.

The YMCA is much more than a fitness centre. It is a place where children learn to swim, seniors build strength, families connect, youth discover confidence, and people of every age work toward healthier lives. As Fitness Manager, Sheila helps oversee a wide range of fitness programs while supporting instructors, staff, and members throughout the facility. She has taught everything from strength training and HIIT to TRX, Barre, Baby & Me classes, and active older adult fitness, helping thousands of people discover that movement can build both physical and mental wellness.

But while many members know Sheila for her expertise in health and fitness, the person who nominated her wanted to highlight something even more important:

Her character.

According to the nomination, Sheila consistently puts people's wellbeing before everything else.

She leads with compassion.

She protects her staff.

She creates an environment where people feel safe, valued, and appreciated.

One story stood out above all the others.

After a staff member experienced a difficult long-term breakup, Sheila stayed behind so they could leave work and take care of themselves.

It wasn't done for recognition.

It wasn't announced publicly.

It was simply an act of kindness from one human being to another.

That quiet act says more about leadership than any title ever could.

The nomination also described Sheila as someone who never humiliates people for making mistakes. Instead of overreacting, she teaches. Instead of embarrassing people, she helps them grow.

She understands that every employee is different.

Outgoing personalities are encouraged with enthusiasm.

Quieter team members are given the space they need without unnecessary pressure.

She meets people where they are.

That emotional intelligence creates a workplace where people can genuinely thrive.

Just as importantly, kindness never comes at the expense of accountability.

The staff member shared that Sheila does not tolerate harassment, verbal abuse, or inappropriate behaviour toward her team. She addresses difficult situations efficiently, professionally, and respectfully: protecting the dignity of everyone involved while making it clear that respect is non-negotiable.

Recognition is another hallmark of her leadership.

Sometimes appreciation comes in surprisingly simple ways.

One nominee remembered Sheila bringing pizza for staff after just thirty-five minutes of extra work, not because the gesture had to be grand, but because she wanted her team to know their effort mattered.

The smallest acts of appreciation often leave the biggest impact.

Those who work with Sheila describe her as kind, passionate, organized, efficient, balanced, approachable, and deeply invested in the success of others.

Perhaps that's why she has become such a favourite among employees, YMCA members, and the wider Lethbridge community.

Leadership is often measured by numbers, budgets, and performance.

But the leaders we remember most are measured by something different.

They're remembered for how they made people feel.

Safe.

Supported.

Encouraged.

Seen.

To Sheila, thank you for reminding us that leadership isn't about standing in front of people—it's about standing beside them.

Your kindness, professionalism, and genuine care have created ripples that extend far beyond the walls of the YMCA.

And those quiet acts of compassion are exactly why you are this week's Invisible Me Highlight.

"The world changes one act of kindness at a time. Sometimes the strongest people are the ones helping everyone else become stronger."
