In Nothing to Wear: A Second Fitting,
Brittany Molenaar picks up Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" at the moment the original leaves off: a child has told the truth, and the Emperor keeps marching anyway.
Nine-year-old Wren learns that being right isn't the same as being believed. She and her town take inventory of what they have, including money, expertise, meeting spaces, media, and allies. They turn scattered grumbling into an organized movement that can't be laughed off. Along the way they discover that winning by a majority can create a new group of unheard people, and they find a solution that leaves no one outside the room.
This tongue-in-cheek retelling invites readers to question why leaders cling to illusions. It also introduces two political theories, Resource Mobilization Theory and integrative democracy, and asks a simple, lasting question:
Who isn't here yet?
