"If You’re Angry and You Know It," takes one of childhood’s most familiar songs and turns its cheerful, repetitive structure into an unsettling exploration of anger, abuse, coercive control, and blame. As each verse returns to the same target, the poem reveals how violence can move beyond isolated outbursts into fear, financial control, damaged relationships, and a story in which one person is made responsible for everything.
Accompanying the poem is an in-depth literary and research-based analysis examining why its deceptively simple form is so powerful. Drawing on scholarship surrounding coercive control, economic abuse, self-blame, childhood exposure to domestic violence, defamiliarization, and expressive writing, the piece explores how repetition can teach a false story, and how reclaiming that story can become an act of voice and authorship.
At its heart, this is a work about what happens when someone absorbs another person’s anger for so long that blame begins to feel like truth, and the quiet but profound moment when the speaker finally says: “it was never me.”
