ED3604 Unit Assessment Portfolio

This is a professional teaching manual created for EDUC 3604 (Evaluation of Student Learning) at the University of Lethbridge, Winter 2026. Authored by Brittany Clark, it presents a complete unit assessment portfolio for a Grade 6 Social Studies unit on Historical Models of Democracy, examining Ancient Athens and the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy.

The manual is organized into six sections. Section 1 establishes the unit design, including the Program of Studies outcomes, essential questions, and a full assessment overview. Section 2 explains the three-part assessment framework (assessment for, as, and of learning) and defines the principles of validity, reliability, and fairness that govern all design decisions. Section 3 outlines the inclusive assessment approach, applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and detailing specific accommodations for neurodivergent learners, ELL students, students with physical or sensory needs, and others, all aligned to the Alberta Teaching Quality Standard. Section 4 presents the first summative assessment: a performance task in which students compare the two democratic systems using a Venn diagram and defend a key idea, complete with the shared rubric, student task sheets, and the original worksheets and assignment examples. Section 5 contains the second summative assessment: a 10-question written test built from a detailed blueprint using Bloom's Taxonomy, including the full student test, answer key, and accommodation notes. Section 6 closes with a reflective self-assessment against the ED 3604 rubric and a professional summary of learning.

The back matter includes a 24-term glossary, a full index, and an academic reference list covering curriculum policy, assessment theory, inclusive education, Indigenous governance, and ancient Athenian democracy.
