A Practitioner's Manual: Grade 6 Social Studies Unit Plan Development is a 95-page professional guide that demonstrates how a complete Grade 6 Social Studies unit on democracy is built, from curriculum analysis through to final assessment.
It takes a real unit — Foundations of Democracy, including Ancient Athens, the Iroquois Confederacy, and modern Canadian democracy — and uses it as a worked example, showing every stage of the design process: mapping curriculum outcomes to the KUSPs framework, planning scope and sequence, designing inquiry-based lessons (the Democracy Escape Room, Classroom Election, Community Action Project, and more), building a balanced assessment plan, embedding Universal Design for Learning, and writing a valid, accommodation-ready summative test.
The manual is intended to:
Pull back the curtain on unit planning for pre-service and early-career teachers who often only see the polished final product, never the thinking behind it.
Model inclusive, inquiry-based design that treats democracy as something students live, not just study — with Indigenous, francophone, and pluralist perspectives meaningfully embedded throughout.
Provide a reusable reference with section summaries, learning outcomes, helpful hints, key notes, teacher tips, follow-up questions, a glossary, an index, and full APA sources — so educators can adapt the ideas to their own classrooms.
In short: it shows the how and the why of unit planning, not just the what.
